Dashain

Dahain is one of the most auspicious festival in Nepal, especially among the Hinduism followers. It is the longest festival in Nepal that lasts for fifteen days and is celebrated not only throughout the country but also in some other countries where Hindu have been living. On this most anticipated festival, all the government offices, educational institutes and all other organizations remain closed for five to ten days, in order to celebrate it together with their family and friends. Most people who go abroad, also reunite in Nepal to celebrate Dashain together. Me and my family went to Bhaktapur to celebrate dashain. We had great time together.

It is also the time of family gatherings and feasts people forget their differences and misunderstandings and visit their relatives. Those away from their home or country return during the time people wear new clothes, eat sels, beaten rice, meat chocolates and spice. For very poor people it is the rare occasion of good and delicious food. Traditional swing such as the bamboo supported Linge pings are very popular. Nepali lifestyle is highly reflected by this festival. Malshree songs are played. Media such as radio, TV and Newspaper broadcast or publish wishes and greetings both their own and the sponsored ones. There is gun firing accompanied by flower showering at Tundikhel in Kathmandu. It’s tradition for commoners to receive tika from the state head of the country.

While the family gathering is the most loved part of this festival, many people practice other traditions such as getting new clothes, having a big feast, and constructing swings. Swings made up of bamboo and coconut rope are erected all across the nation. Tradition dictates that you must swing at least once in this festival, and the swing will take away ill feelings and replace them with feelings of vigor and rejuvenation. Youth also can be seen flying kites during Dashain.Across the country, people worship Durga Bhawani (the mother goddess) and visit temples during Nauratha, the nine days preceding the main day of Dashain. The people of the Madhesh and Terai regions also perform musical programs and Ramlila (a dramatic reenactment of the life of Ram). The Nepali music that symbolizes Dashain is known as Mal Shree Dhun.

At the tenth day of dashain we called it bijaya dashami. We together put tika from elders. I had collected almost two thousand rupees within tika ceremony. The best part of dashain for me is playing swing we prepared it near my home with the help of elders. We had collected rs 1000 from each house and bought bamboo and rope. We had pepred it within 5 hours. Our elders wanted us to know how to prepare the swing so we also get involved in preparing it. I played a lot. This dashain was my best dashain ever.
                           THE END
